January 1, 2011

It’s been wild and crazy here at New Life! Yesterday was New Years Eve… We’ve had a wonderful team here from Madeline’s church! All week long they have been spending every night with the kids teaching them and also preparing for a Talent contest for last night… we had 3 groups… Dance, Drama, and Chorus…

In Haiti, New Years is a very big occasion. Little did I know that it would be a very big occasion for me!

Under the Mango Tree last evening, with all of our kids, staff and Madeline’s team here, we were all playing and singing worship songs…right before sunset, everything got quiet. Madeline’s girls got up and started singing… I thought…hum, that doesn’t sound like a worship song? They were singing

“Because You Love Me “, by Celine Dion… Danny had planned for this special time to ask me to marry him again! Danny and I have been together since we were 15… married 25 years… The Devil tore our marriage apart. For 2 years we were not together… but through the prayers of our family. God took what was meant to destroy us and restored our marriage! This was impossible in reality, but thank God that he is a God of the impossible… that’s his specialty… I will continue to say THERE IS NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD! As we are living proof!

After this awesome time, we ate dinner, then went into the church to have our talent show…the kids were awesome! They danced, did a drama and then sang… It might just be me, but when I hear our kids sing, I think they sound like Angels… it’s just such a peaceful sound. Maybe it’s because we are under a tin roof or under the stars… whatever it is; it just radiates love into my heart and fills me up.

Before we left the church, the team anointed all our kids and us with oil and prayed over us. Last year they did the same thing and didn’t realize that 10 days later, we would face a devastating earthquake.

After the talent show, we watched a movie and ate popcorn. Then headed back to the church for a MAJOR party to bring in the New Year! All the kids 13 and up got to go… I'm telling you, Haiti was alive last night! We had a Church service going on one side of the compound, a party on the back side, music coming from all directions and of course our kids dancing and rapping to Christian Music! It was great to see our teens; being teens… they danced and played until 3:30am… I don’t think any of Haiti slept last night, including us!

Today the Haitian tradition, which is taken very seriously, is to have Pumpkin Soup…it is to be the first meal of the New Year… It has an orange looking broth, with potatoes, vegetables and beef… we served it with rice… It was so good!

Right now as I'm writing this, I'm sitting with my feet up next to Danny under the Mango Tree watching the kids play soccer… the wind is blowing, the music is loud, the kids are laughing.

Yes, I will admit, I want to cry… I’ve cried a lot in the last few weeks, some sad, as I was doubting how we would make it through Christmas and New Years, but as everyday unfolded, God showed himself to me in little miracles that only he could do…My tears have become tears of Joy and of belief.

I will say that as I sit here and close my eyes and just listen to the sounds of New Life… I hear the sounds of happiness, of love, and of Angels…

What a great way to end and start the New Year….HAPPY!

THERE IS NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD!
